From the first Viennese school to Schubert

This precise musical analysis arose from a need felt over the course of a few years of musical analysis that I provide at the Liège Conservatory since 1993. Its only ambition to help the apprentice analyst in his first.

It is therefore by no means a course much less of a methodology for the analysis. And if, through these pages, I would propose a number of tools to help in the investigation and understanding of the music, the student will always ponder them, question them and imagine, when music requests, his own tools. The various proposals made here are the sum of years of work, reflection and questioning. This constant questioning, fundamental to any investigation, I owe to my teacher and friend Jean-Claude Baertsoen who was able to stimulate in students a taste for research.

Also, this work, which is in its first version, may be modified several times in order to improve or even completely renew some analytical tools that are available.

This first volume primarily addresses the problem of tonal music. The second will look at the romantic harmony, but also on the analytical investigation of some classics of the twentieth as Debussy, Bartok, Stravinsky, Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School, etc.
