Variations book 1 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for piano
Edited from the autographs, manuscript copies and first editions by Hans-Christian Müller
Fingering and notes on interpretation by Carl Seeman
This edition contains W.A. Mozart's fourteen sets of variations for piano which have survived in their entirety. Together with the two sets of variations for violin and piano (KV 374a, 374b) and the variations for piano duet (KV 501) they constitute, beside the other piano works, a comparatively extensive group of works in the composer's total output. Conceived as occasional compositions for his own concerts, in which it was customary to improvise and perform variations, and for the instruction of his pupils, the variation sets are based mainly on themes which were already well known and popular in those places where Mozart was concertizing.
