On 1 April 1777 the oboist Giuseppe Ferlendis entered the service of the Salzbourg court chapel. It was for Ferlendis that Mozart wrote his only oboe concerto. At the very latest it must have been finished by 22 September 1777, the day on which Mozart set out his great journey to Mannheim and Paris, taking the score with him. In Mannheim he met the oboist Friedrich Ramm, to whom, oddly enough, he also gave this concerto as a present : "I made him a gift of the oboe concerto, which is being copied out in a room at Cannabich's. Ramm is beside himself with delight; I played the concerto to him on the piano at Cannabich's" (letter of 3 December 1777 to his father). (...)
