Mozart wrote a total of five violin concertos, all in Salzburg. The first - his first instrumental concerto altogether - originated in 1773, the others in the second half of 1775. Although Mozart is known to have been un accomplished violinist, it is uncertain whether he composed his concertos for his own use or for that of other violinists at the Salzbourg court, such as Antonio Brunetti. Whatever the case, the Mozart correspondence clearly reveals that both he and Brunetti played these works. All five concertos appeared in print only after the composer's death, and at first none enjoyed particularly wide dissemination. Today they belong without question to the standard repertoire of every violinist. (...)
