The flute, whose origins date back to the beginning of time, and which is almost an extension of man's breathing, has a repertoire covering more than twenty centuries of musical history. Here the instrument is reinvented for the modern age, from Claude Debussy in 1913 to Philippe Hersant in 1995.

With varied writing exploiting the capacity of the instrument in all its expressive variety, the works in this collection offer a remarkable overview of fabulous musical landscapes, giving the player free rein to demonstrate not only technical prowess but also musical imagination.

This volume is built around two key innovative works of the solo flute repertoire : Syrinx by Debussy and Density 21.5 by Varèse. These two beacons light up a creative musical territory that spans a whole century.
