Scherzi by Frédéric Chopin for piano

Edited from the autographs, manuscript copies and original editions and provided with fingering by Jan Ekier

The four Chopin scherzo are piano works composed between 1831 and 1842.
These scherzi Alfred Cortot said, "These are games, however, but terrifying, dances, but feverish, hallucinating, they seem to punctuate the harsh round human torment."As for Nocturnes, Polonaises or studies, Chopin appropriates a traditional musical material, in this case the scherzo, and transcends completely. Here, one could almost use an anachronism in calling these scherzo of "expressionist". Romantic yes, but a black and edged romanticism. The light and entertaining aspect of the scherzo seems like troubled, distorted and "disturbed" by the serious and feverish attacks genius of Chopin, for his dazzling and harmonic daring. In Chopin scherzo is not a joke like the others, it is imbued with a dark and disturbing veil which raises the genre to new heights of expressivity. In short, the scherzo Polish has no equivalent. For example, the only common point with the scherzo of Beethoven is the measure 3/4 during very fast movements.
