Bach's solo violin works BWV 1001-6 have survived in a handsome autograph fair copy now preserved in the Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin (Mus. Ms. Bach P 967). The autograph title page reads as follow : "Sei Solo/â/Violino/senza/Basso/accompagnato/Libro primo/da/Joh. Seb. Bach/ao. 1720". Since the work did not appear in print during Bach's lifetime, this autograph fait copy in its primary source. Today, when studying the solo sonatas and partitas, violinists generally refer to the autograph, which is readili available in a full-size facsimile from Bärenreiter in Kassel. (...)
