Bach's gamba sonatas form an important addition to the repertoire for low-register string instruments. Each of the three sonatas was composed as a separate piece and has come down to us in that form. In short, unlike so much of Bach's chamber music, the gamba sonatas do not constitute a unified cycle. Nonetheless they have several features in common : they are consistently written in three obligato voices (the sporadic continuo interpolations can be safely disregarded) and all three are arrangements of works originally intended for other combinations of instruments.
